Heard someone say Robin Swift in Babel has no personality….
When will you understand that being a ‘threat’ in colonial structures strips you of identity and only allows you to exist in opposition. He has humour, he finds joy, he has passion, but none of that matters as the system is not built to express those characteristics from him!
The review also said the book was just white people hate repeated in different ways, when will you look deeper and realise that colonial powers are built to serve white people and run levels upon levels deep. It is embedded into everything the British empire does! In what they eat, their hobbies, their entertainment, their finance, their goverment etc etc.
From a narrative stand point, you can dislike these things. But Babel isn’t just telling a story, it is retelling history and creating fantasy symbols to make that history accessible to everyone! The symbol of silver work encompasses the entire Industrial Revolution and makes it digestible for those uneducated in that field. This book rejects colonialism through the narrative.
Someone also said the translators notes were useless. R.F Kuang uses a third perspective and translator’s notes to present this story as we read other stories of colonialism, we are fed it through others, we will never know the pure raw truth. Kuang also moved to America when she was four, she herself is a translator for her own history! She is also educated in Oxford, Cambridge, Yale etc. The addition of translator’s notes adds a level of depth to this story that I adore!
This is why Babel is a necessary read for all those wanting to learn more about colonial history, esp in China and India.

Going by your post about daughters in high society being all-rounders, are they expected to learn certain languages, follow literary canons or maybe know specific geopolitical happenings? Is it a specific set of skills & information or is it more on a general knowledge basis?
you should definitely know your country’s language and English. Most competent girls I’ve noticed fall in two categories - either they’re extremely strong in arts (classic literature, art, music, food, essentially creative stuff) or STEM and finance.
as an overall, one normally has a general range of soft skills - the ability to converse with ease, socially confident, “respectful”, poised etc.
There are certain cheat codes to achieve this ^ and make it seem like you’re really an all rounder in the short term. Obviously in the long term you’ll have to work on your skills if you haven’t, but here’s what you can do. 1. Study the most common socially asked questions
How are you?
Where did you go for college/ uni?
What do you do?
Where have you travelled lately?
do you know about ….. ?
do you know XYZ person?
What are your hobbies?
and practice, practice these answers. Here’s your objective : to come across as knowledgeable, friendly and rational. don’t for instance, speak negatively about anyone or any experience. Instead of saying “oh my god this experience was absolutely ghastly” say “this is what I really liked and this is what I felt could be better.” You are seen as a refined woman then, not a bitchy teen. Use a wide range of vocabulary- CORRECTLY. Practice it so that it seems natural to you. Even fairly common words like “apt, apprehensive, sentient, derelict” - can make you seem a lot more polished than “so true, unsure, alive, run down”.
2. Be aware of three of the biggest news stories before any social event. Be it a dinner, party, a baby’s christening, anything. and here’s what will make you stand out - know those 2-3 stories in detail. In the age of people simply skimming over news and not making the effort to dig deeper, knowing something very well is an instant giveaway of being well read. For instance, Trump and the birthright citizenship situation. Something that an average person (especially if they are not American) may not know is that lots of non- American pregnant women - mostly Indian - in the US have begun approaching doctors to have their babies premature before the Feb 20 deadline. Now, when I mentioned that at an event recently in India, people were surprised. I was able to bring value, information to the table that no one else really knew about.
So when you speak, you want to drop a nugget of value. What you don’t want to do is get very high and mighty - you have to drop this information nonchalantly, as if you know everything. Nonchalance will give you bonus points.
3. Listen more than you speak… ATTENTIVELY. You cannot break eye contact, don’t lose focus. Nod slowly, tilt your head slightly, back straight, shoulders and hips turned towards the person who is speaking. Don’t rush and don’t rush them.
practice these small things even with your friends, school, teachers, workplace - to make something a habit, you need to practice it anywhere and everywhere. You can’t just be polished to one group of people, you must be polished to all.
4. Always approach the women/ aunties / mothers first. Compliment them genuinely. And then greet the man. The only times I break this rule is if the man is decades older, is someone I know very well, is a friend of my parents’, or if I know him better than his wife.
5. you won’t be expected to cook and clean and all that, these days it’s not really an expectation. And also, unless you want to attract men like that and you want to be that person too, it doesn’t make sense.

Bridgerton Rewatch Observations:
Despite how she’s the main love interest of season 2, Kate doesn’t really get the attention she deserves, (which is the point of her character development) but there’s little moments that really deny her the Main Character Romance she deserves
No one ever fills out Kate’s dance card
Not even Antony
Or Lord Dorset
It’s not even clear if Dorset attends balls. He’s only around for the occasional promenade
If Dorset did attend balls, he didn’t even talk to Kate
Kate is always watching everyone else be courted or danced with, but Kate is never asked to dance till the finale of the season (Edwina forcing Antony to dance with Kate doesn’t count)
No one even really converses with Kate at balls let alone flirts or even fetches her a lemonade
No one calls on Kate
Again, not even Dorset
Kate’s birth parents’ names are never said. We only know her father as a clerk but not even Lady Mary calls him by name.
We also don’t know how old Kate was when her father passed
There’s no flashbacks of Kate’s backstory, which may have been due to budgeting a landscape that looked like India but Antony got flashbacks for his character development in the same seaosn
When Dorset does pursue Kate, he actually says something inappropriate between the lines, “If friends can visit her in India” and that casualness and unchaperoned in that society was not allowed. It almost sounded like he was asking if he can hook up with her whenever he was in India
BUT in front of Antony (the viscount) and the ton Lord Dorset makes this sudden remark about trying to convince Kate to stay in England when he just flirted with her about visiting her in India
It’s easy to forget that Kate’s early life was in the midst of the “Working Class” which were labors such as house maids and staff. She grew up needing to know skills from a very early age
It’s never stated outright but implied why Kate took over her family’s finances after her father’s death. Kate’s father was a clerk, he had skills in order to survive, and he pushed Kate to learn as much as possible. For example how she can hunt. Whereas Lady Mary who grew up in the early 1800s in the palace never had to learn a trade, let alone how to manage finances. So Kate took over because there was literally no adult left in her life who could even remotely balance a checkbook but her and that must have been so scary at such a young age
Though Lady Mary must have thrived in India because she seemed very confined in the palace, and got to know a part of her heritage that seemed erased (this an assumption from context)
Lady Mary’s mother doesn’t seem to engage in Indian culture much (from the 3 scenes we saw of her) but Lady Mary practiced so many traditions with her daughters from language to wedding traditions, to even hair oiling
It’s crazy that Eloise never told any of her family that the queen accused her. She was a teenage girl who was accused with treason from the head of state and one of the most powerful people in her country, AND SHE DIDNT TELL ONE PERSON IN HER FAMILY. CRAZY

this is such a med school rant so pls feel free to ignore
after writing 18000 personal statements throughout my life, i'm staring at an empty document for my medical school personal statement and i have nothing to say.
they probably want me to talk about time i've spent in the clinic that taught me compassion and empathy and the positive impact i've made on patient's lives. but honestly, i've spent most of my time so far at the lab bench, working on research that is years away from being applicable to the human patient. i've spent most of my time studying economics and financing and healthcare policy and studying the social determinants of health.
how do i explain that all of these experiences have helped me learn that compassion and empathy anyway? that when i see the lower-income housing the city built next to the 8-way intersection i immediately think of the children who walk to the bus stop inhaling a higher amount of carbon monoxide and vehicle emissions pollutants because of my research into the way regional factors affect health status? that the value of research is being able to dissect the mundane to see social factors that help you understand people?
how do i explain that every day i've spent alone in lab, the clock ticking close to 9pm, and i am hopeful to find something significant, i am sharing a liminal space with the most inspiring mentors, twenty and thirty and forty-somethings who have given up over a decade of their lives to not just be physicians but to be physician-scientists. that they have made me realize that research is not removed from patients, that everything we do is a love letter for the communities we hope to eventually support. every moment in a lab is woven together with the idealism of saving lives. that knowing more will allow us to help more.
how do i explain that finding communities and building communities taught me more about empathy and compassion than any clinical experience? i've lived half lives in both america and india, and nothing has been more impactful to me in being able to see and respect new perspectives. that desperation with which i wanted to know myself, different parts of my own culture and my own family, it directly translated into my passion for understanding others. in a clinical setting i realized the demands of the clinical practice, how hard providers have to work to try to meet the many needs of their patients in not even close to ideal conditions but everything i learned there was practical. it taught me the practicalities of medicine.
but all the best parts of me are romantic, idealistic, creative and bright, soft-edged and emotional. they are parts that will slowly fade as i am trained, but they are equally the parts that make me want to be here in the first place. they are the parts of me that make me a loving daughter, a caring sister, an effective teacher, a passionate sports fan, a disciplined singer, a curious learner. every part of me has always focused on the story. the person behind everything. that is what i want to highlight. how the FUCK do you highlight that
i don't know how to explain that i am fascinated by the humanity in everything, and a good clinician should always be primarily concerned with the humanity in their patient before they see the disease. and beyond that, i don't even know how to show my fascination with humanity.
i wish i could just type out 'be curious, not judgemental' on a blank doc and send it in. it's basically my entire point. every part of me is predicated around a freaking ted lasso quote.

Dreams, Drive & Disruption: How Millennials and Gen Z are Rewriting India's Future
Millennials and Gen Z are not just shaping the future of India, they are the future. From rejecting traditional careers to leading digital revolutions, here's how they're changing everything.
By Juie Bele

India is experiencing a generational shift like never before. At the center of it all? Millennials and Gen Z, young, bold, and unapologetically redefining what it means to live, work, and dream.
India’s Youthquake:
India isn’t just a young country in spirit, it’s young by numbers too. With over 65% of the population under 35, the transformation we’re witnessing is massive, visible, and unstoppable. At the core of this revolution are Millennials and Gen Z, two generations rewriting the rules on work, ambition, money, relationships, and identity. They’re not asking for change, they are the change.
A New Kind of Dream:
The old Indian dream was simple, government job, city flat, family, and early retirement. Safe, predictable, respected. But that’s not the dream anymore. Today’s youth are chasing.
· Passion over pressure
· Freedom over familiarity
· Purpose over prestige
They’re building brands from bedrooms, freelancing with international clients, launching startups before turning 25. They’re making bold, self-defined choices, driven by meaning, not just money
Careers without a Corporate Ladder:
Millennials questioned the system, Gen Z rebuilt it. Gone is the formula of engineer, MBA, corporate manager. In its place? A new generation of:
· Creators on Instagram and YouTube
· Designers freelancing from remote Indian towns
· Coders trained via online bootcamps
· Writers running successful newsletters and blogs
In this world, skills beat degrees. Portfolios matter more than resumes. Platforms like YouTube, Substack, and Behance are the new career springboards. The gatekeepers are gone, the gates are open.
Not Just Jobs, Journeys:
Today’s careers aren’t ladders, they’re winding paths of discovery. Young Indians are choosing,
· Remote work over rigid routines
· Renting over buying, for flexibility
· Freelancing over 9 to 5, for freedom
· Side-hustles over side-tables, for self-expression
They’re not unstable, they’re intentional. And they’re choosing experiences over possessions, meaning over monotony.
Financially Fierce:
This isn’t your parent’s version of money management. Young Indians today are:
· Investing in mutual funds, index stocks, and crypto learning about personal finance on Instagram and YouTube
· Managing multiple income streams, from affiliate marketing to remote gigs
· They’re delaying marriage, avoiding debt, and rejecting outdated financial timelines.
For them, financial freedom is power, and they’re claiming it early.
Socially Conscious, Digitally Native:
Gen Z was raised online, but they use the internet for more than just memes. They’re
· Advocating mental health and ending the stigma around therapy
· Challenging inequality, gender, caste, sexuality, climate, and more calling out injustice, both online and offline
· Activism isn’t a side hobby, it’s woven into their identity.
From Instagram infographics to climate protests, they’re showing us what 21st-century citizenship looks like.
But the Tension is real:
Behind the cool jobs and viral posts, there is still; parental pressure to pick “safe” careers, mental health struggles in a hyper-digital, hustle-heavy world, uncertainty in a job market shaped by AI and automation, Loneliness and burnout, even in this hyperconnected age.
But the response is different. They’re talking openly, seeking help, prioritizing therapy, boundaries, and community. Vulnerability is no longer a weakness, it’s a superpower.
What This Means for India:
It means India’s future isn’t coming, it’s already here:
· The 20-year-old launching an ed-tech startup
· The small-town designer working with a client in Berlin
· The student podcasting about mental health in Hindi
· The young couple choosing to travel instead of settling down. They’re not rejecting tradition for the sake of it, they’re refining it, rebuilding it, and reimagining it. This isn’t rebellion. This is reinvention.
If you’re a young Indian reading this, keep going. Your dreams are valid. Your journey is powerful. Your choices are yours. And if you’re not from this generation, start listening. Because the future is speaking, and it’s speaking in their voice.

Whether you’re a student, a working professional, or someone planning a career shift into finance, Tally training in Chandigarh offers a golden opportunity to build a solid foundation in business accounting. Note
My initial is A, he/him.
I am from Mumbai, India
My D.O.B is 01st August 2004
Time of birth : 01:37 pm IST
I would like to know about my future spouse.
Thanks
Hi😊 For your reading I am going to use mostly vedic astrology.
In D1 chart aquarius saturn is transiting your 5th house (dating/hobbies/creativity) aspecting your 7th lord mars in leo 11th house (jupiter + mercury) by 7th aspect indicating that you might meet your future spouse or longterm partner this year, but there could be a certain delay or obstacles when it comes to dating and creativity. You might meet this person online, through friends/groups, social networks. This gives me slow burn/serious romance, friends to lovers or online dating. Actually the delay could potentially be that your partner comes from a different background(wealthier than you or have different values or the need to build stability for example) with mars being 2nd lord or you can become friends online and then later meet in person to have a romantic relationship.
With taurus jupiter transiting 8th house aspecting all these placements above it brings abundance, support and optimism helping you guys meet sooner and overcome obstacles in the relationship , mitigate misunderstandings, share interests/goals and values, communicating openly about your feelings fears/traumas, healing, transformation, etc.
MOON CHART (considering moon as rising)
Taurus jupiter is transiting your taurus 5th house bringing abundance in romance/dating/hobbies/creativity/finances/stability/selfworth.
D9 CHART
In your D9 chart Jupiter in taurus is transiting 12th house saturn aspecting 7th lord scorpio jupiter(10th lord) conjunct sun indicating that your future spouse might be meeting you this year. This meeting might be fated/karmic (soulmate), you might meet each other through dreams, foreign lands, spirituality or in a transformative/healing time. You might grow and work together in service oriented projects, support each other, overcome obstacles related to work, past traumas, daily routine, physical and mental health, etc.
With aquarius saturn transit in 9th house aspecting leo moon in 3rd house and all these placements above this confirms long distance relationship and possibly meeting through higher education or in a foreign country. Your future spouse might be facing challenges related to higher education, travel, learning, communication, emotions, authority figures, mother, siblings, family. You guys might have communication issues, one of you might not open up or know how to express their feelings. (Delays in developing a relationship)
Pisces/virgo rahu/ketu is transiting your 10th/4th house axis so your future spouse might be focusing on her career, trying to balance his personal life with professional life, could be changing jobs or rethinking about his responsibilities, etc.
DASHA/TIME PERIODS
You are currently running rahu-venus dasha from 2022 till 2025 which is great for marriage/meeting spouse (rahu is in your 7th house and venus -> love + significator of spouse for men).
(You actually went through rahu-venus-mars dasha from 19 november 2023 till 22 january 2024; Have you met someone back then? Mars is your 7th lord and Darakaraka -> spouse ).
Right now you are running rahu-venus-jupiter dasha till 28 november 2024 which is a good chance as well to meet your longterm partner (jupiter ->marriage and is conjunct your mars).
You also have good chances next year 2025 specially during rahu-venus-mercury dasha from 19 may till 22 october, mercury is conjunct your mars; gemini jupiter transit in may will be affecting your gemini venus and saturn activating longterm romantic relationships/marriage; Cancer jupiter transit in october will be influencing 7th house from moon chart👀 (you might also gain a lot of success/recognition in your career cause you sun in cancer 10th house in d1 chart)
If you want to know specific time periods(dashas pictures) or more you can DM me.
NOTE1: Remember that we might have many soulmates and potential long term partners.
